Gillian Ayres

Gillian Ayres RA, the painter, printmaker and teacher, is regarded as one of the leading British abstract artists of her generation. Born in London in 1930, she has had a distinguished career, with solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1981); the Serpentine Gallery, London (1983); Tate, London (1965); and the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997). Her paintings have evolved from early abstract expressionist works of the 1950s, to the more restrained paintings of the later 1960s, through to the very physical presence of the colourful, textured, impasto works she has been making since the late 1970s.
