Kathy Prendergast

Kathy Prendergast (born Dublin 1958) is a London-based, Irish artist who studied in Dublin and at the Royal College of Art. Her works focus on issues including landscape, identity, mapping and power. In 1995 she was chosen as the best young artist at the Venice Biennale for her project The City Drawings. She is represented by the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin, and had a solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 1999. Her work is represented in the collections of Tate, London, the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu and the Albright-Knox Museum, USA. In recent years Prendergast has exhibited widely in Ireland, Britain and abroad, including the Sydney Biennale; the ICA, Boston; and The Drawing Center, New York.

An example of one of Prendergast's best known works, her digitally altered map, Lost (1999), was exhibited in the England & Co exhibitions The Map is Not the Territory i (2001) and in Part iii (2003) at the James Hockey Gallery, Farnham. In this work all place names have been deleted from a map of North America, except for those names which include the word 'lost', creating new perceptions of a familiar map.
