Iraida Icaza

The artist photographer Iraida Icaza was born in Panama, Republic of Panama. She studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and Sociology and film at Newton College SH in Massachusetts. She lives and works between Panama and London. Icaza has exhibited internationally, including a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Panama (MAC Panamá): Iraida Icaza and the Forgotten Museum (Iraida Icaza y El museo olvidado) in 2017. She has exhibited with England & Co at Photo London and Paris Photo since 2018. Images from her most recent project, Altered States, will be shown at Paris Photo in 2021.

Throughout her creative practice Icaza reveals a profound understanding of the natural world and scientific observation. Drawing on sources in the arts, science and history, she creates works of imagination and poetic sensibility, of spaces and qualities that contain reality as well as illusion.

"I explore recurring themes of illusion, memory and the nature of photography as a means to preserve and document what is, what was and, by implication, what might be."

Public collections holding Icaza's work include the British Museum, London; Museo de Arte Y Diseño Contempóraneo (MADC), San José, Costa Rica; Museo de Arte Contempóraneo de Panamá (MAC Panamà), Panama; Muejeres en las Artes de Centro América, Tegucigalpa, Honduras; World Bank Art Collection, Washington DC.
