Liz Rideal

Liz Rideal (born 1954) is a London-based artist and writer known for her pioneering photo-booth photography and photographic works using imagery around the aesthetics and culture of cloth and drapery and botanical themes. She works primarily with photographic processes, but her practice has also incorporated collage, watercolour, sculpture, tapestry, film, film projections, and large-scale installation and architectural projects.

Since around 1985, Rideal has used improvisatory techniques together with multiple sequences of four-part photo-booth strips to produce collages “in which the miniature images are either subsumed in the overall tissue of a much larger composition, or individually enlarged” (Anna Moszynska).

Rideal studied at Exeter University/College of Art in the late 1970s; was educational resource writer at the National Portrait Gallery, London; and is currently Professor of Fine Art in the Painting Department of the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, having been a lecturer there since 1992.

Rideal’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions in public and private art galleries across Europe and America, with related catalogue publications and public commissions. Public collections holding her work include Tate; Victoria and Albert Museum; British Museum; the National Portrait Gallery; the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada; Museet for Fotokunst, Denmark; Portland Art Museum, George Eastman Museum, the Yale Center for British Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

• Liz Rideal will be exhibiting a selection of her photo-booth works with England & Co at Photo London 2026.
